According to the U.S. Department of Energy, carefully positioned trees can save up to 25 percent of a home’s energy consumption for heating and cooling.

Here are some things to keep in mind when planting trees to cut energy costs. 

Evergreen trees:

• Create wind breaks, which block cold winter winds, easing the load on your home heating system
• Varieties such as live oaks, mountain laurels and Yaupon Holly are highly recommended
• Should be planted on the north and west sides of your home

Deciduous trees:

• Provide energy-saving shade during the summer by reducing the workload on your air conditioning system
• Allow sunshine to warm your home during the winter months 
• We recommend red oaks, sycamores and redbuds 
• Plant them on the south and west sides of your home

Planting tips:

• Always call 8-1-1 before you dig; it’s the law
• Locate trees a proper distance from your home
• Plant large species at least 20 feet away from power lines
